How to Declutter and Edit Your Space Like a Pro

Introduction

Decluttering your space can feel as daunting as scaling a mountain, often leading homeowners to procrastinate the process. To tackle this challenge effectively, focus on one designated area at a time. Start by visualizing how you want the room to look once it’s uncluttered; this mental image will guide your efforts.

Once you identify what’s truly essential in your space, it becomes easier to recycle, donate, or discard the items that no longer serve you. By breaking down the decluttering process into manageable steps and maintaining a clear vision of your goal, you can edit your space like a pro and create a more organized, serene environment.

The best way to tackle this is in stages—focus on one spot and forget the rest, and the task would appear less exhausting. Don’t set time frames. One success will lead to another. Take 5 minutes the first day and don’t do more. Then take another five tomorrow and so on so forth. Before long, an entire house will be done. Keep music going for easy listening on. Make it a fun activity. This will also build confidence as success is experienced

Put Away/Recycle/Fix or Mend/Trash/Donate

To effectively declutter your space, keep five baskets or bins handy, each labeled for specific purposes. The “Put Away” bin is for items that have strayed from their designated spots, such as clothing, books, and broken items. Evaluate your medicine and bathroom cabinets, placing frequently used items in the top drawers. Additionally, declutter your foyer or entrance area by using a console table for keys and mail, making them easily accessible. Regularly clear out shoe shelves and closets, as they tend to accumulate clutter from shoes, jackets, and other items. This consistent approach will enhance functionality and organization in your home.

Tips and Tricks for Effective Decluttering and Editing

Tips and Tricks for Effective Decluttering and Editing

Put Away:

  1. Designate a container for items currently in use but out of their original storage spaces (e.g., coffee cups in the bathroom, sweatshirts in the kitchen, newspapers, and mail on the dining table).
  2. Return these items to their designated spots.

Recycle:

  1. Use a bin for recyclable materials like paper, plastic, and glass.
  2. Recycle items you no longer need, such as empty tissue boxes, dried-up pens, and non-functional chargers.
  3. Assess toys for wear and tear before recycling.

Fix/Mend:

  1. Create a container for items needing repairs (e.g., shoes that need cleaning).
  2. Take items that require mending to a tailor or dry cleaner.

Trash:

For electronic items, check the manufacturer’s website for safe disposal methods to protect the environment.

Designate a bin for items to donate to a favorite charity or someone in need. This includes clothing that is no longer worn or doesn’t fit, as well as old books, toys, and school bags that are no longer used or have been outgrown.

Create a “maybe” box for items you might want or need someday. Review this box monthly to assess the usefulness of its contents. Implement a simple filing system that is regularly used and sorted. Discard items that are no longer relevant or keep them filed appropriately, maintaining one section as an “action” file for immediate tasks related to decluttering.

Set aside a basket for items that are simply trash. Discard outdated medications, makeup, skincare products, and unused items from the shower or under the sink. Start with nightstands by removing anything you no longer use, including empty tissue boxes and broken chargers.

In the living room, eliminate non-functional electronic items (e.g., old wires and audio/video jacks) and dispose of them in the trash box. Simplifying your space is essential for creating an uncluttered home, reflecting a shared philosophy of simplicity and harmony among all household members.

Maintaining a Clutter-Free and Organized Space

Clutter-Free and Organized Space

Keeping your kitchen clutter-free can be a challenge since it has many different types of items stored in it. Start the decluttering process category wise – glassware/cutting boards and knives/utensils/cutlery and so on. Same with bottles of ketchup, sauces or condiments that are past their expiry date. Keep away and keep in sight items that are used most often and are likely too anytime. Emptying a shelf or a drawer or counter tops is the best place to start. Followed by one more shelf or drawer the next day. Putting back items where they belong, and neatly is what it would take to declutter. Once a counter top looks free of clutter, this is the look that would be comforting and soothing and then this would become an important incentive to declutter. Importantly, zeroing in on a permanent storage spaces for remote controls, magazines, books, letters and parcels

For the living room, declutter this space regularly since it is most used space with a variety of items in it. Take care especially of bookcases, console, and side tables. Clear the coffee table and entertainment centre and all that is strewn around it. Set up permanent storage spaces for frequent-use items like remote controls, magazines, and books. Put Away these commonly used items to their proper places. Remove electronic items that are not connected to your television or home theatre system. If not is use, like chargers, gadgets, and gaming equipment store and take only to use. Drop them in the Put Away box. Toys may be assessed for wear and tear, and then Put Away before proper storage. Finally examine the Put Away bin and return the contents to their respective places in each of the rooms.
